This piece deals with the changing notions of how our society is structured.

The explosion of computer-generated communications in the last decade has changed the way we think about community and society. Ferdinand Tönnies, one of the founders of sociology, talked about the pre-modern (pre-industrial) social group as gemeinschaft, which is loosely translated as community, and described the small self-contained entities that characterized the social groups of that period. He then went on to define a new kind of social group, gesellschaft, or society, which he felt better identified the emerging industrial nation-state, with its common value systems.

With the advent of the Internet and the rapid proliferation of online services (all linked through the ubiquitous MODEM), our ideas about community and society are being changed once again.

How is a community defined in cyberspace?
